carrying forward its commitment to supporting playwrights, and bringing bold, imaginative, theatrical work to life.
Paula Vogel’s Bard at the Gate
An independent theater initiative presented during the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020–2023
During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, when stages across the world went dark, Pulitzer Prize-winner, Paula Vogel founded Bard at the Gate, a virtual play-reading series celebrating groundbreaking plays that were too ambitious, too quirky and too smart to be contained. Strong scripts. Raw talent. New audiences. New Bards.
The series offered a platform for overlooked works that had never been produced, alongside plays that deserved a wider audience. The plays were selected by Ms. Vogel and an Advisory Board, from among the hundreds of scripts she had read and/or mentored over four decades.
